Important: Collect only with landowner permission, and do not collect rare species unless you have a permit to do so from the relevant agency--California Department of Fish and Game, or US Fish and Wildlife Service.

 

Spring/Summer Collection:

  • Most herbaceous species seeds need dry storage. Collect in paper envelopes.
  • Cottonwood seeds need to be sown immediately in moist medium.
  • Ferns need a little special handling--place sori side down onto a piece of clean paper with a one inch fold at the bottom before placing in envelope.
  • Please write information on the flap side of the envelope:
    • Species Name (if you know it; If you don’t, make a guess with a ?, drawing or specimen)
    • Date collected M/D/Y
    • Location collected from (be specific)
    • Your name and phone #

 

Fall/Winter Collection:

  • Acorns and other nuts need to be stored in paper bags or envelopes
  • Fleshy fruits such as madrone, snowberry, huckleberry, etc., need to be collected in plastic bags with a little moist (not wet) medium containing peat; refrigerate as soon as possible.
