Bird-friendly Glass Workshop

Saturday, July 12, 2025 — 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

Join a hands-on anti-bird/glass collision workshop and learn how to apply Feather Friendly markers to windows and glass doors to prevent bird collisions. This workshop is being sponsored by the Bringing Back the Natives Garden Tour, the Golden Gate Bird Alliance and International Bird Rescue. Space is limited: registration is required – register here.

This workshop will be held in Martinez, at the home of garden tour host Nancy Salsig. Come join us in installing Feather Friendly markers to Nancy’s sliding glass doors. When we need a break we’ll tour Nancy’s native plant garden and hear how she has attracted the extensive list of birds she has seen in her garden. Come meet other native plant and bird fans! We’ll have fun while learning how to protect birds. Bring your own picnic lunch and drink.

Background:

It is estimated that bird/glass collisions cause up to one billion bird deaths a year in the United States alone.  You may be surprised to learn that most bird/glass collisions occur at residential and low-rise buildings. Even if birds fly away after hitting a window, they likely die of internal injuries later.

The good news is bird/glass collision is a problem we can prevent

How? Just apply visible markers to the outside side of the window glass. Once the markers are in place, instead of seeing deceptive reflections of trees or clouds—and thinking they can fly “through” the glass—the bird will see the markers, recognize the glass as a solid object, and avoid it. To protect birds, the Tour has partnered with Feather Friendly, one of our favorite companies that sell products that will prevent bird/glass collisions, and also with bird-safe advocate Erin Diehm to alert people to the problem, and provide a solution.
