The East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) is starting a new restoration project at Sibley Park, modeled after the very successful Skyline Restoration Project.
This unique site is just a ten-minute walk from Sibley Park’s main parking lot. This one-acre plus meadow already has a great set of native plants to anchor the restoration: 64 native species have been found there to date, including Mule’s Ears, Star Lily, Needlegrass (2 species), Wild Rye, Checker Mallow, Popcorn Flower, and many others. But, they are being smothered and choked by invasive species!
The multi-year goal is to create space for the natives to thrive by removing the threatening invasives, stop their seeding, and exhaust their seedbank in the soil. With enough volunteers, we can put this special meadow patch of California on a path to recovery.
Besides spending time in nature with like-minded people, volunteers will learn to identify native and exotic plant species, become familiar with advanced weeding techniques, and gain knowledge and skills in seed collecting and planting. We hope this project can attract a core of volunteers to form a weekly Saturday morning restoration effort.
