There is another Saturday event coming up at the Sibley Wildflower Meadow Restoration Project! It will take place on Saturday, Sept 28, from 9am to noon. Get some exercise, plant wildflower seeds, remove invasives; and — bring a snack and stay afterward to make new friends at Sibley Park!
This day will start by learning to identify native plants under the expert eye of Glen Schneider, Parks staff, and expert volunteers: then the group will plant out wildflower seeds and weed for two hours. At noon you will wrap up and enjoy your bring-your-own picnic at the site, and get to know other native plant fans better.
This unique site is just a ten-minute (slightly uphill) walk from Sibley Park’s main parking lot. This sloping one-acre plus meadow already has a great set of native plants to anchor the restoration: 64 native species have been found there to date, including late patches of Mule’s Ears, and also Star Lily, Needlegrass, Wild Rye, Checker Mallow, Popcorn Flower, and many others. But, they are being smothered and choked by invasive species!
The multi-year goal is to create space for the natives to thrive by removing the threatening invasives, stop their seeding, and exhaust their seedbank in the soil. With enough volunteers, we can put this special meadow patch of California on a path to recovery and glory!
Wear layers as Bay Area weather can be unpredictable; sturdy shoes, long pants and long-sleeve shirt, and hat for sun.
What to Bring: water bottle, lunch or snack, gardening gloves (thin leather, if you have them).
As this is an EBRPD event, you must sign up here: there are currently 20+ spaces available.
Meet at the parking lot in the Sibley Staging Area, 6800 Skyline Blvd, Oakland, CA 94611
